The HRD ministry has announced 30th October as the date for laying the foundation stone of Indian Institute of Science and Educational Research in Kolkata. The ministry said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will lay the foundation stone for the first IISER in Kolkata.
The institute will be located in Kalyani, on the outskirts of the city. The West Bengal government has already given land for the institute. Earlier this year the central government has decided to establish two IISERs in Kolkata & Pune respectively. The main objective behind the establishment of these two institutes is to improve the standards of science education in the same tune as that of IITs. The ministry has targeted to start the course from the next academic year.
