India takes up project to digitally inter-connect Africa

Filed under:

Extending its technological expertise to Africa, India today signed an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to take up an ambitious project to digitally inter-connect all the 53 countries of the continent.

The Pan-African Network Project (PANP), brain child of scientist-President A P J Abdul Kalam, will be undertaken at a cost of 63.7 million US dollars (Rs 286.6 crore approximately) entailing setting up of the infrastructure, operating it and training manpower of respective countries over a period of five years.

The project is to be completed by early 2007, Secretary (East) in the External Affairs Ministry Shashi Tripathy told reporters after the MoU was signed between the Indian government and African Union (AU) here.

The MoU was inked by Minister of State for External Affairs Rao Inderjit Singh and AU Commissioner for Infrastructure Bernard Zoba.

The PANP will put in place a communications network that will provide state-of-the-art communication facilities and connectivity to all Heads of State or government in the African Union, including video-conferencing facilities.

The initiative will enable India to share its expertise in diverse areas of information and satellite technology, education and health care and demonstrate the benefits of tele-education and tele-medicine to the people of Africa.

Various premier Indian institutes like Telecommunication Consultants India Limited (TCIL), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), AIIMS and IGNOU will be the partners in the project.
