In a major boost to the research and study of Sanskrit language, the Union Cabinet on October 27 resolved to declare Sanskrit as a classical language. After Tamil, Sanskrit will be the only language to enjoy such status. It will enable the universities to set up chairs for studies on Sanskrit. The cabinet also decided to relax the norms of declaring a language classical. Instead of the erstwhile norm of 2000 years, languages that are over 1500 years old will now be eligible for being included in that category.
With this the cabinet has also approved Rs. 1000 crore for the establishment of two world class science institutes namely IISER in Pune and Kolkata. The attempt is to encourage education in pure science. These two institutes would start functioning from the next academic year.
