Countrys premier technical institute IIT Kharagpur has introduced a new course which fuses statistics with informatics. The institute has designed a fusion of statistics and informatics that delves into the application of the subject in areas like bioinformatics, biostatistics, demography and statistical quality control using software technology.
The institute has already MSc in statistics and informatics. But the IIT course will covers a wide range of areas starting with in-depth courses in statistics, development of computing skills, stream focus on industry related areas through electives in fields such as financial management, biostatics/bioinformatics, actuarial statistics, demography, statistical quality control, etc. The course is also designed to prepare students for further graduate work at the PhD level, which in turn prepares students for research level careers in statistics.
M.Tech students and research scholars of various departments who want to get into new areas of statistics will also benefit from the course. Since research in statistics at IIT Kharagpur is highly interdisciplinary, the fusion of informatics and statistics is expected to help out young scholars. To begin with, 15 students will be admitted to the course through IIT Joint Admission Test to MSc (JAM). Candidates seeking admission will have to write the mathematics paper of JAM. Only those with a BA/BSc (honours in mathematics or statistics), or BA/BSc with mathematics and statistics as subjects are eligible
