Is work experience necessary for doing an MBA? How much and of what kind? I have just completed my B Com. What kind of jobs would be relevant for me?
One relevant job could be to work as a research analyst wherein you are involved in financial research, evaluating the performance of various sectors. Or it could even be in sales and marketing of financial services in a bank.
While it is not mandatory to have work experience, it is certainly an advantage.
All said and done, it does carry weight, although the extent of which is a matter of conjecture. Companies prefer people with work experience in their functional areas because they have a lot more to offer and build a better gene pool in the organisation.
But too much experience can also go against you - particularly if it is in an industry other than that of the recruiter. Some others prefer freshers for their energy, enthusiasm and trainability.
Also a stint at work helps you face the panel with a convincing answer to Why an MBA? while participating in case-studies, you can relate relate better to managerial and professional problems if you have come across such situations in real life.
Work experience fills the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical experience. It gives you clarity of goals and a sharper perspective and overview of whats happening in the market. You will be able to gain much more value from your course.
