Delhi University (DU) to Host College Carnival Soon

The Delhi University (DU) will soon showcase national talent in art and culture. Inviting performers from universities across India, DUSU is planning a students’ festival on north campus on the lines of Harvard and Oxford carnivals. “Even if DU is one of the biggest universities in the country and DU college students have a variety of talent to exhibit in visual art, theatre, music and dance, we do not have any collective achievement to boast of. We do not want the colleges to perform in isolation, all students should unite to represent themselves on behalf of the university. We want to organ¬ise a grand event that would represent the festive character of the varsity,” said Ragini Nayak, president, DUSU.

Colleges organise their own fests in September and October where they invite rock bands and pop artists to perform but the university does not have any festival of its own with the youth performing. “We plan to invite participation of students from other institutes across India to compete with our performers. We want it to turn into a platform where talent across the cities meet, interact and improve. We would also try to create a public figure of young talent like the one done by the reality show - Indian Idol,” elaborated Ragini.

The proposed festival would be a colourful event to celebrate all kinds of creative activity at various venues - both outdoor and indoor. “Besides the competition, the participants would also have an informal discussion about exhibitions and performances. They can even sit down for a light dinner and dessert and share their ideas and thoughts on such subjects,” said Ragini, who on behalf of the students’ union would initiate participation from college students across India.

Students also feel that such an initiative would boost the sagging spirits, since they are overburdened with studies. “It would be a break from the routine events and would also give us a platform to interact with hidden talents,” said Rajesh Naik, a student of Ramjas college.

The quality of college fests would improve, the young felt. “The quality of college fests are deteriorating every year, if such an initiative is taken, the performers would improve their skills to stand on par with students of other institutions. This would be a larger platform with a cross-section of young talent,” said Jaita Das, a student of Kirori Mai college.
