I have completed MSc in computer science via distance learning. Presently I am working in HP-authorised service centre as a trainee engineer. I want to make my career in Networking. Please advise.
You already possess the basic qualification for getting into networking. Knowledge of hardware is the foundation for a career in Networking. From there you can gain expertise in LAN and WAN which is in high demand. LAN shares the information and resources within the premises. This can be executed using products like Windows NT or 2000 from Microsoft, Unix from SCO, Solaris from Sun Microsystems, Netware from Novell, etc. WAN is a Network of Networks, which is implemented through internetworking devices such as Routers and Switches.
Someone from a non-engineering background who has good knowledge of computer fundamentals could also enter this field.
In addition, recruiters prefer certain global certifications.
Some of the popular International Certification Courses available for LAN Administration are MCSE, UNIX Admin, LINUX Admin, CNE etc., whereas for WAN Administration you have CCNA, CCNP, CCDA, CCDRCCIE.
Vendor certifications like Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Cisco Certified Network
Professional (CCNP), Cisco Certified Internet work Expert (CCIE) or Sun Solaris Administrator can fetch pre¬mium salaries both In India as well as globally.
Another preferred certification is VUE Prometric, which covers most certifications, irrespective of the vendor platform.
Coaching facilities for clearing the various online tests for certification are offered at a number of Authorised Training Centres (ATCs) of the respective company.
Internet Security is an emerging technology in networking, which can be implemented by using Firewalls. A very large part of the overall firewall implementation worldwide is done by Checkpoint. They offer globally recognised courses like CCSA, CCSE through their authorised training centres.
