Social Factor

Filed under:

I am doing B Sc (Botany honours) second year, but I’m least interested in the subject. I don’t want to take science in FG and would rather go for MSW. Could you please tell me what are job or career options after doing this and institutes in India offering the course.

Social Workers work with a wide range of people who need support children, adolescents or adults, eluding their family members and Ends, and other professionals such as police, lawyers and doctors. Working with people or commutes, they help their clients under-stand, tackle, and find solutions to 2 problems they face.

For sheer variety, few occupans can match social work, which offers the broadest range of opportunities and settings. Job enues in this field can broadly divided into three categories:

Government Sector: The Government of India conducts examinations rough the UPSC and ate Public Service commissions for appointing Welfare Officers at the central id state levels. National bodies like the Central Social Welfare Board SWB) and National stitute of Public Co-leration and Child Development (N1PCD) id major community development projects also appoint welfare officers. These jobs are also open to 3 degree-holders in related fields like Sociology, Psychology, :Economics, etc.

NGO Sector: Most Social Workers work in NGOs, many of which are Dluntary non-profit organisations, There are over 18,000 registered NGOs in India. You could even opt for voluntary agencies, Indian or international, which support active GOs functioning in specific areas such as health and family planning, child welfare, old age care and housing for the destitute.

Some NGOs have a touch of cor¬porate culture and offer decent emoluments and perks to skilled professionals. The Industrial and corporate sector also recruits MSWs from leading institutes as labour welfare officers and Personnel managers in their HR and Industrial Relations departments.

International Initiatives: After gaining relevant experience in an NGO, you could even decide to work for a UN agency or secure an international placement. Big international organisations like the United Nations Development Programme, Work Health Organisation, UNICEF, Norwegian Organisation for Rural Development, International Labour Organisation offer high profile jobs. Mostly contractual in nature, these jobs essentially involve liaising and policy planning.

After gaining sufficient experience, you could either set up your own NGO or even work as a consultant. For further insights, you could refer to Careers in Social Work, Vision Books, New Delhi.
