Information
IT IS no secret that Visual Basic (VB) is the most popular programming tool available today. It has a long and glorious history. It created a revolution in Windows programming. In time it has become more fun and more powerful. Visual Basic was introduced to the public in 1991.
It has since then developed by leaps and bounds with every new version.
It is a member of the Visual Studio family of development products, which includes Visual C++, Visual FoxPro, Visual InterDev, Visual J++, Visual SourceSafe and MSDN Library.
So what is Visual Basic? The Visual part refers to the method used to create the graphical user interface (GUI). Rather than writing numerous lines of code to describe the appearance and location of interface elements, you simply add pre-built objects into place on screen.
The Basic part refers to the BASIC (Beginners All-Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) language, a language used by more programmers than any other language in the history of computing.
Wide application
Visual Basic is used in multi-environmental offices, workshops, libraries, hospitals, supermarkets and hotels and even at home to develop applications which involve data. If you can imagine a programming task, it can probably be accomplished using Visual Basic.
Things you can do with Visual Basic:
*Create a streaming video of animation.
*Create all kinds of applications such as Text Editors, Image Editors.
*Create all kinds of tailor-made software for hospital, hotel, airline, library managements, etc.
*Create all kinds of network programming such as chatting software, communication software.
*Create Web-based applications such as online shopping mall, online examinations, quiz, etc.
According to Kiran Kumar, Director of NICT (National Institute of Computer Technology), Visual Basic can create 32-bit executable programmes. Microsoft Visual Basic is a language with rapid application development environment that gives you fast, easy, and important tools to quickly develop Windows applications.
Using Visual Basic, you can develop simple utilities or sophisticated applications. Data access features allow you to create databases, front-end applications and server-side components for most popular database formats.
ActiveX technologies allow you to use the functionality provided by other applications and even automate applications and objects created using Visual Basic. Internet capabilities make it easy to provide access to documents and applications across the Internet for your application or to create Internet server applications by Visual Basic.
Mr. Kumar says, Visual Basic truly is much more of a programming environment than just a language. Using it, a single developer can quickly create a simple application; a team of developers can create a sophisticated, distributed application. Advantages of learning Visual Basic with traditional programming languages like C, Cobol is that in the traditional programming languages we have to write many lines of code just to draw a single square on screen, but the same square can be drawn on screen using a mouse in Visual Basic.
It is an IDE (Integrated Development Environment) consisting of Tool Box and Tool Bars similar to MS Office, for easier, quicker and rapid application development. Visual Basic is an interpreter-based language unlike other traditional programming languages, which uses separate editor and compiler.
Students of all branches - science, commerce, arts, engineering- can easily learn and implement Visual Basic. Microsoft Visual Basic is the fastest and easiest way to create applications for Microsoft Windows. Whether you are an experienced professional or brand new to Windows programming, Visual Basic provides you with a complete set of tools to simplify rapid application development.
As usual, the demand for all the Microsoft products are very high in India and worldwide. This is the main reason that every software programming student is exposed to Visual Basic.
Jobs for the asking
Mr. Kiran feels that If you have decided that Visual Basic is your cup of tea, then be ready to spend three months fully dedicated to it. And armed with two or three Visual Basic projects along with your graduation certificate, you should be able to easily get a software development job.
Learn other software such as Testing Tools (Win Runner, Load Runner and Test Director), MS Access and Oracle for better prospects. It is an added advantage if you are also exposed to .net platform.
