The colleges claim that with the present fee structure, it is impossible to impart quality MBA education.
A big fee furore is brewing with fifty MBA and MCA colleges across the State under the banner of Karnataka Private Post-Graduate Colleges Association, taking up cudgels against the Justice H Rangavittalachar Committee on Fee Fixation for professional colleges.
Sample their complaints: A management college in Mysore has been allowed to charge Rs 12,400 per student for its MBA course though it has to pay its University an affiliation fee of Rs 10,000 per student per year.
MBA and MCA colleges were allowed an uniform fee structure of Rs 45,000 and Rs 55,000 respectively last academic year 2004-05, but the fee structure has now been revised and ranges from Rs 11,000 to Rs 40,000 for different colleges, with effect from 2004-05. So colleges are now expected to refund students the excess fees though this was fixed by the government last year.
The colleges also claimed that though the committee has notified the fee structure, each college is yet to get its individual fee structure. Further, they would be filing for a stay in the High Court soon after, as the fees they proposed in their submissions to the committee ranged from Rs 80,000 to Rs 1.2 lakh.
Theres no way we can impart quality MBA education at this fee. Both Universities and the All India Council for Technical Education inspect our colleges every year to see the quality of education but if we have to run it with the fees notified by the committee, it is impossible to continue. We may as well close shop at this stage, rather than have to stop mid-way during the year, said KPPCA president C N Krishna Reddy.
The association has written to the committee to send individual intimation of the new fee structures, after which it will approach the courts, he said. Students are confused about how much fees they have to pay, said association secretary W P Krishna.
K-MAT for admissions
KPPCA has opened applications for its own parallel admission test for entry to management quota seats in MBA and MCA courses in Karnataka. The test will be held in ten exam centres across Karnataka on June 5 between 2 pm and 5 pm.
Though the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) is yet to notify its test schedule for admission to the government quota of 50 per cent seats, the association has notified its date with Karnataka Management Aptitude Test for MBA/ MCA (K-MAT).
As many as 28 colleges affiliated to Bangalore University, 13 colleges under VTU, four in Mangalore University, one college each in Tumkur, Karnatak and Mysore Universities, and two colleges under Gulbarga University are part of the association.
We have about 2,000 MBA seats and 2,600 MCA seats under the management quota. So far, we have already received over 6,000 applications. Nearly 30 per cent of them are from outside the State, said Mr Krishna.
Applications are open till May 28 (the last date for filled-in applications to be submitted).
