Information
During a two-hour visit to the Indian Institute of Science on Saturday, finance minister P. Chidamabaram got a glimpse into a few major initiatives taken up by the institute in recent times.

The FM, who granted the institute Rs 100 crore in his recent budget, visited the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) facility and the Nano Science facility, both recently set up at IISc. Chidambaram also viewed a presentation by IIScs Society for Innovation and Development (SID) which has been fostering research tie-ups between the institute and industry.

We were very privileged to have the finance minister for about two hours at our institution. He viewed a presentation on IISc and saw the state-of-the- art NMR, nano sciences facilities, said IISc director Goverdhan Mehta. We would have liked a longer interaction, but because of the time available we were able to arrange visits only to some recently acquired facilities.

The visit was a surprise for most at the institute, and IISc was intimated only a day earlier. It came as a surprise to all of us. The finance minister expressed happiness over the way the institute is shaping up, said professor S. Mohan, the head of SID.

The nuclear magnetic resonance facility at IISc is considered one of the best in the country. The nano-sciences initiative has seen an investment of over Rs 25 crore for infrastructure over the past year.
