Parmendra Yadav, a student from Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, has no roots whatsoever in Karnataka, neither does anybody else from his family. Yet, Yadav has the golden pass — a Common Entrance Test (CET) admission ticket!
Yadav had not fudged his records, nor was he impersonating for another candidate. He is, in fact, a victim of the CET Cells heartless decision to allow every applicant to take the test — only to be told at a later stage that they are not eligible for a seat in Karnataka. Yadav and over a dozen other non-Karnataka candidates were issued hall tickets for the test on Tuesday.
And thanks to the Cell, few know that their effort has been in vain. We have allowed everyone to take the test. When they return for the seat selection process, we will tell them that they are not eligible for a seat as only the CET scores of Karnataka students are valid for a seat in any college of the state, a CET official stated.
Whether it was the lack of time to run domicile checks or a goof-up by the Cell, the officials are unfazed by the situation. We have issued hall tickets for everyone who sent a demand draft. The numbers were too huge to conduct checks, said an official. To add to the confusion, many non-Karnataka PUC students studying in state colleges have applied for the CET test even though they do not meet the criteria of having studied/lived here for at least seven years.
But CET special officer D N Nayak only blames the students for this confusion. All those who are not from or do not meet the mentioned domicile criterion will not be entertained during the counselling process.
But the students who know what they have landed themselves in are not willing to give up without a fight. One of them said they will continue to take the test even on Wednesday. For, theres always a legal recourse.
