Alabama State University, founded 1867, is a historically black university located in Montgomery, Alabama. ASU is a member school of the Thurmond Marshall Scholarship Fund. The impetus to establish a school for the black citizens of Alabama, which would eventually become Alabama State University, began shortly after an event that not only tore this country apart, but created a far different United States in which relationships and attitudes were altered irrevocably.
