From being turned away by several schools to topping the visually impaired division in SSC, Ajay Kumar has come a along way.
With 88.80 percent in the state board exams, the 15-year-old has also notched the second place in the physically handicapped division. I am on top of the world, exults Ajay, who is only too familiar with the lows hes overcome before reaching this height.
Kumar suffers from albinism, a condition where the pigment-producing agent melanin is absent in a person. This causes a white skin tone. At times, as in Ajays case, the pigment is absent in the retina too, thus affecting vision.
At the age of two, it was discovered he not just had low vision but also a refraction. After trying every available facility, his parents approached the low vision department of the L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, which had just opened. He now makes annual visits for treatment and relies on a variety of spectacles to unravel the world around.
When no school in the city was willing to accept him, PVGs Vidya Bhawan School at Ghatkopar took him under its fold.
In his formative years, he was very insecure due to his mere 20 percent vision. He was a very keen learner though. His teacher in junior KG understood that and tapped it.
