The first bench of the Madras High Court, comprising Chief Justice Markandey Katju and Justice Ibrahim Khalifulla, on Wednesday posted a batch of writ petitions, filed by students challenging the scrapping of the Common Entrance Tests and improvement examinations for admissions to professional courses, to June 22 for final hearing.
A day after Justice P D Dinakaran transferred a batch of writ petitions to the Chief Justice for passing appropriate orders, the first bench directed the Madurai bench of the High Court to transfer to it all connected petitions for disposal. Chief Justice Katju directed the Tamil Nadu Government to file its counter by June 21.
The Chief Justice said that to render speedy justice to affected students, the bench would complete the hearing on June 22 itself and give its verdict in a couple of days.
Aggregate marks
Senior advocate Nalini Chidambaram filed a petition before the bench, asking for the list of aggregate marks obtained by students in their school leaving examination and the CET already conducted for this academic year by the Anna University and compare it with Plus Two marks alone to decide whether the scrapping of the CET would benefit rural students, as claimed by the Tamil Nadu Government.
Scrapping the CET, the government said students would be admitted to professional courses solely on the basis of marks secured in their school final examination.
