Information
Fashion shows would no longer form part of the annual and farewell functions of colleges in Madhya Pradesh. The state government, in a bid to arrest the growing influence of the decadent western culture on the younger generation, has clamped a ban on fashion shows on the campuses. Immediately after coming to power in the state in December last year, the BJP government had proposed a ban on students wearing western outfits to their classes.

The government directives told the college principals to allow only debates, dramas, songs and dances in functions. Fashion shows, generally involving students dressed in their Sunday best, parading themselves on the stage and the conferment of the title of Mr. and Ms. so and so college on the winners, had become a part of most college events. The winners were crowned a la national and international beauty contests.

In February last year, the then minister for higher education had banned jeans, T-shirts, skirts and other western outfits from the college and university campuses in the state. A dress code was proposed, under which the girls were to dress up in salwar-kameez and the boys were required to wear trousers and shirts. The colour of their dress was the only choice left to the students.

The minister had declared that provocative dresses worn by students was leading to perversion and hence the need for a dress code. Girls wearing jeans and tight tops generate amorous feeling in the boys, the minister revealed.

The dress code, however, was withdrawn at the instance of the then chief minister Ms Uma Bharati who said that the government did not wish to dabble into the personal lives of the students.
