Thousands of students across the State, are set to undergo counselling to choose the branches and colleges (medical and engineering) of their choice from June 14 in Bangalore. Vice-Chancellor of Visveswarayya Technological University (VTU) Dr K Balaveera Reddy has suggested that the students give preference to branches of their choice, rather than colleges.
Talking to Deccan Herald here on Friday, he said, the decision taken by the students and their parents during counselling is vital. It either makes or mars the career of the students. Rather than landing in a college of their choice by compromising with the branches, the students should opt for the branches of their choice first and then select the colleges, he advised.
Students who had obtained ranks within 20 in CET, are the fortunate lot to get both - the branches as well as the colleges of their choice. But for those whose ranks fall somewhere around 100, the choice becomes difficult. Hence, irrespective of which college they get, the students should choose the branches they intend to pursue, Mr Reddy suggested.
The selection criteria of end-users which comprise the MNCs and other companies, solely depend on the marks obtained by an engineering student. The companies are interested in knowing from which university the student completed his BE / BTech and not the college. For that matter, most of the engineering colleges in the State are good, though not the best. Therefore, the students should never be hesitant to compromise with colleges, Reddy adds.
The bachelors degree programme is something that decided the career of engineering students. The post graduate degrees and researches the students take up will not make much of a difference, Mr Reddy said.
Some of the engineering colleges may place the bright students in various companies quickly after their degrees. However, the students should understand that their placements may get a little delayed after they completed their degrees from other colleges, but they would positively land with a good job, provided they fair well.
The process of counselling for medical, dental, ayurveda, homoeopathy, unani, naturopathy and yoga courses is scheduled to begin on June 20, in Bangalore, while for those aspiring for engineering and technology courses, on June 27.
However, the counselling (medical) is set to start on June 14 for those falling under special categories(physically handicaped, ncc cadets)
