Information
Mr Girija Shankar felt the need to establish folklore museums in all districts to encourage meaningful contribution towards preserving cultural heritage.

If culture is destroyed, everything else is destroyed and is an indicator of intellectual bankruptcy. Education must be used to preserve culture said Prof Hi Shi Ramachandra Gowda, president of Samagra Kannada Janapada Sahitya Samputa Samithi of the Department of Kannada and Culture.

Speaking after releasing Mumbale, a compilation of folk songs by Mohan D Holegadde of Chickmagalur in Kamadhenu Ganapathy Temple recently, the professor lamented the lack of interest among people about culture and heritage. He called for maintaining individuality to avoid being influenced by consumerist culture.

Prof Gowda lauded the efforts of Mr Holegadde, who had focussed on rural life instead of falling into the trap of consumerism like everybody else. He advised the youth to work hard and then obtain facilities and privileges.

Dwelling on the origin of folk songs, he said that women used to sing these songs while performing household chores and tried to forget their worries.

Prof Hampanahalli Thimme Gowda, principal, Arts College, Hassan who spoke on the work, said that several people had amassed folk songs and traditions. But this was not so in case of folk prose. The reason for the trend had to be the songs capacity to attract people quickly, he felt.

Promising attitude

Mumbale depicts the unique folk cutlure of a region, namely, the Malnad of Chickmagalur. The author has shown promise in continuing with collecting more songs. What is unique to the book is that, there is a detailed introduction of various authors as well as meaning to various rural words.

Journalist S Girija Shankar, who presided over the function sought establishment of folklore museums at the district -level.
