Information
The governments share of medical and dental seats will come down by 147 and 150 seats respectively compared to last year following the State Cabinet accepting 50:50 ratio for seat sharing between government and private medical and dental colleges. A 60:40 ratio was adopted in 2004.
According to statistics made available by the CET Cell, of the total intake for medical courses in the state, 485 seats are in government colleges, 900 in minority colleges and 1,475 in private unaided non-minority colleges. The governments share in minority medical colleges (450 seats) will remain unchanged as 50:50 ratio was followed for admission to these colleges last year too. The government share in unaided non-minority medical colleges will come down by 147 from 885 last year (60 per cent) to 738 seats (50 per cent).
Similarly, the government share in unaided non-minority dental colleges will come down from 900 (60 per cent) to 750, a loss of 150 seats. The total intake in unaided non-minority colleges is 1,500. The governments share in minority dental colleges (370 seats) will remain unchanged.
With no change in the seat sharing ratio for engineering stream, governments share in engineering seats will remain unaltered.
Of the total 44,365 engineering seats in the state as many as 33,015 seats were under government quota last year.
Meanwhile, JD (S) ministers at the Cabinet meeting are learnt to have opposed the 50:50 ratio for MBBS and BDS admissions. They alleged that the government was succumbing to the private educational institutions by agreeing to a lesser quota than last year. This would be a blow to the meritorious students from middle class and poor families, they argued.
They also took exception to the trend of reducing government quota medical seats every year.
TO SCRAP CET OR NOT?
The State Government will study the implications of Tamil Nadus decision to scrap CET and admit students to professional courses on the basis of qualifying examination marks before deciding on adopting a similar model in the state.
Briefing reporters, Information Minister B Shivaram said, a decision will be taken only after studying the implications. But it will be applicable only from the next academic year, Mr Shivaram said.
