Information
It is important for educational institutions to strike a right balance between academic and co-curricular activities for it has a bearing on how the careers of students are shaped, the president of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Kannada Sahitya Parishad, Pradeep Kumar Kalkura, has said.

He said the Government Pre-University College for Women at Ratha Beedhi here has become a role model for others.

Releasing Putta Hakki, cassettes and compact discs of poems prescribed in Kannada textbooks for students of classes one to four here on Tuesday, Mr. Kalkura said the college is rendering true service to literature. Lauding the initiative of Literary and Cultural Association of the college in bringing out the audiotapes, he said such dedication for the cause of literature is rare.

Stating that poems learnt during ones student days remain in memory for long, he said the manner in which they are taught also mattered. In a word of advise to the artiste, Rajeshwari Bhat, who has lent her voice for the audiotape, Mr. Kalkura said there should be less emphasis on background music in such endeavours.

Lawrence DSouza, Principal of Rosario Pre-University College, said the audiotape would serve as good resource material for teachers of schools. He lauded the association for taking up the project jointly with Kalkura Foundation and said this is indicative of the fact that creativity is alive among teachers.

P. Seetharam Bhat, whose poem, Kogile, features in the audio, was honoured. The organisers also felicitated Ms. Bhat. P.P. Joseph, the college principal, presided over the function. K.K. Leelavathi, secretary of the association, was present.
