Information
FAER, a non-profit NGO has been trying to provide equal opportunities to students by bringing about a government industry-educational institution interaction.

Quality education- education that is interesting, relevant, job-fetching- is the goal of many great educationists and planners. There are many hurdles in reaching this to students. Take the job- fetching aspect of education for instance. Industry experts predict that there will be thousands of jobs available in the computer field in the next few years. Do our students have the necessary skills for these jobs? More importantly can the teachers teach them what is current when there is such an exponential growth in technology? What about rural and other less privileged students? How to lessen the digital divide and how to make teaching interesting?

These hurdles can definitely be overcome with resources, commitment and experience - all of which are in abundance at FAER-Foundation for Advancement of Education and Research - a non-governmental, non-profit initiative which has several industries supporting it through effective participation in its programmes. FAER wants to provide equal opportunities for education at all levels. FAER wants to improve the quality of technology teaching in educational institutions. The latest technology, be it software or biotechnology, when taught well increases job opportunities. FAER also wants to motivate students to experiment in the labs and also do actual engineering - something that the foundation thinks, the current stream of faculty and students dont do much of.

FAER, which was registered in 2004, believes that all these can be achieved through interaction of government, industries and educational institutes.

Professor DK Subramanian, Dean and Retired professor from IISc, as its President is the right person to bring about this interaction. Prof DKS whose interests range from cutting edge computer technology to non-conventional energy resources has been involved with the Maahithisindhu programme of the Karnataka government. He has taught extensively at various levels and is involved in several research programmes.

We want to take up both short-term (faculty and lab developments) and long-term programmes (post-diploma/ graduate programmes in engineering). We want to focus on polytechnics right now because it is a neglected area with ample scope for improvement. Experimentation is weak here and we want to strengthen that, says Professor DKS.

The trust, with academicians and industry experts on board has already brought about several collaborations. More than a hundred teachers and several students as also the industries themselves have been the beneficiaries of this collaborative work.

Future plans of the foundation include setting up of new institutes wherever needed, faculty development programmes in areas like web designing, system integration etc in Engineering and Polytechnic colleges and setting up of PC service centres in polytechnics. FAER also wants to introduce WiMax Technology in India in association with INTEL. It wants to support the sponsor a scholar programme of Motorola. FAER is also planning a post diploma programme in software testing for polytechnic students, which has got the Karnataka Governments approval. It wants to develop inexpensive experimental devices that can be used even in rural schools with electricity and space constraints.

FAER can be contacted at: G5, Swiss Complex, 33, Race Course Road, Bangalore- 560001.
