Information
The trial run for the Edusat-Country Wide Classroom programme to be launched nationwide on August 15 will be conducted at the Educational Multi Media Research Centre (EMMRC) in the University of Mysore on Friday.

The EMMRC is one the 17 teaching centres selected for the programme by the Consortium for Educational Communication (CEC) of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

The programme that covers 58 centres across India aims at upgrading, updating and enriching the quality of education while extending the reach. The countrywide classroom programme provides advantage in dissemination of information by being interactive, while the earlier systems were one-way communication. The ISROs Space Application Centre in Ahmedabad will provide the satellite connectivity for the Edusat programme.

G.D. Sharma, Director of CEC, told The Hindu that the trial would be conducted at the EMMRC on Friday and the Ministry of Human Resources Development will dedicate the services to the nation on August 15. Mysore will be the third centre to be commissioned under the programme, he said.

The broadcast through the programme will present the latest advances in all fields and try to broaden the horizons of the viewers. Initially, broadcasts will cover areas such as mathematics, fine arts, geography, economics and commerce, history, zoology, political science, home science, botany, physics, sociology, language and literature, psychology, chemistry, education, functional English, environmental science, anthropology, music, art and culture and technology along with a programme on career watch.

According to the Director of EMMRC, A. Balasubramanian, the Edusat-Country Wide Classroom programme will supplement the array of educational programmes managed by the UGC. The UGC, he said, has been organising educational programmes on DD 1 and DD 4 broadcast under Gyan Darshan, and has also made video files of the lecture programmes available on the UGC-CEC website besides archiving these lectures in Learning Object Repositories. These lectures have also been digitised under e-content development for the benefit of learners, he added.
