Congress leader and Congress MP from Amethi, Rahul Gandhi, on a private visit to Hubli on Thursday, participated in an Akshara Dasoha programme of ISKCON at Model Higher Primary School, Anandnagar. As the visit was purely private, the young Gandhi was totally shielded from the glare of the media.
Gandhi was expected to land at Hubli airport at 9.30 am, but due unexplained reasons, the landing was delayed by more than two and half hours. He went directly from the airport to Government Model Higher Primary School at 12.24 pm and the school children were eagerly waiting for their guest.
Infosys Foundation chairperson Sudha Murthy, trustee Mohandas Pai and Cooperation Minister R V Deshpande were also present. They served meals to students with Rahul and also relished the special recipe of the day - shira, dal rice and curd rice. Later, Rahul interacted with the students in a classroom.
Rahuls is an enigmatic character. He looked reserved outside the classroom, but as he entered the classroom, he became one among the students, school headmistress Kamala Mulimani told reporters.
He enquired about their studies and interacted for 10 minutes. she added. Rahul also talked to teachers of the school and sought first hand information about the mid-day meal programme. Teachers explained how the programme had helped increase attendance. As most of the children learning in government schools were from poor and downtrodden families, the scheme had helped them a lot, he was briefed.
