A separate directorate should be considered to preserve Sanskrit, said Dr Chandrashekar Kambar.

The need for a separate directorate for Sanskrit and its promotion among the masses figured among the major discussions in the legislative council on Wednesday. Suggestions that the religious mutts be roped in to help in the same were also heard.

Raising the issue, Dr V C Acharya expressed concern that lack of enough students taking up Sanskrit language as a subject of study was being cited as the reason for the proposed closure of few Sanskrit colleges or winding up Sanskrit departments.

Not only is Sanskrit the basis of many modern languages, but contains vital know-hows on disciplines like medicine, chemistry, maths, which are yet to be completely deciphered from the various Sanskrit texts, Dr Acharya noted and regretted neglect of the language.

Sanskrit which is presently clubbed with the directorate of Urdu and other languages be put under a separate directorate, he suggested.

Mr Ramachandre Gowda (BJP) suggested that the traditional form of Sanskrit study prevailed in religious mutts, and hence their support be roped in for putting the language to social use also.

Dr Chandrashekar Kambar noted that music and Sanskrit were the only two subjects where Indian methodologies of study (Gurkul and mutt-based studies) prevailed against the British influence.

A separate directorate should be considered at least on the grounds of preserving this methodology, he said.

In response, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Ramalinga Reddy said that the study of Sanskrit at school and college levels could be brought under a single directorate.

He clarified that the government was yet to take a final decision on merging the Sri Chamarajendra Sanskrit College, Bangalore with the Government Sanskrit College in Mysore.
