Admissions to MBBS and BDS courses continue to remain in a jinx, with the State Governments hopes of a favourable order from the Supreme Court on Wednesday remaining a dream.
Medical admissions, that have to be completed by the Medical Council of India (MCI) deadline of July 25, have been caught in a time-warp for the last month, as the MoU arrived at between government and private college managements is yet to get the SCs stamp of approval. Counselling cannot be held until the SC approves it.
The government had earlier said that counselling for MBBS and BDS admissions would begin tentatively by July 17 or 20, if the SC order comes by July 13.
However, with no word yet from Delhi on the MoUs fate, neither the CET Cell nor college managements (Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental colleges in Karnataka) have begun counselling. The CET Cell has to begin counselling latest by July 21, if it has to complete admissions by July 25.
The hearing is scheduled to July 15; so , even if we get a sanction for the seat-sharing formula and fee structure as detailed in the MoU that day, we can announce the counselling schedule immediately. All we need is five days, for MBBS, BDS and Indian Systems of Medicine courses, said CET Cell Special Officer D N Nayak.
However, if there is no verdict on July 15, the government would have to go back to the Apex Court and plead for an early verdict.
Officials feel that in case the SC order comes later than July 25, it could use that as special circumstances to seek a deadline-extension from the MCI.
BE on schedule
Meanwhile, the first phase of the two-phased admission rou nd for engineering (BE) courses will come to an end on July 16, with rank 40,000, as on schedule.
Though there is doubt whether medical admissions will start by July 17 (as was earlier thought), the CET Cell has decided against continuing with engineering admissions for now.
Seat selection for the remaining engineering ranks will be held only after the first round of medical admissions.
