IIT alumni from Minnesota have offered to help in implementing rain water harvesting plans in areas facing severe water shortage.
IIT graduates settled in Minnesota have offered to assist India in establishing rain water harvesting systems and a network of water literacy centres.
In response to a call by President A P J Abdul Kalam, the IIT alumni from Minnesota have offered to every Indian MP and to Parliament their technical and operational support in implementing a rain water harvesting plan.
This involves no high technology but an impulse coming from America may help when the traditional techniques, once used widely in many parts of India, have fallen in disuse over the decades. While water shortages have become critical, most of the rain water is just allowed to go waste.
Rural development
In the recent Pan-IIT conference here, a session on rural development evoked considerable interest and several innovative schemes were discussed.
The IIT group has taken up the plan with Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee who has emerged as a champion of rain water harvesting. The Speaker has offered Parliament building for implementing the plan presented to him by the Pan-IIT Group of Minnesota during his recent visit to Chicago. The centres will use mass education technologies to improve the use of rain water in areas facing water shortages. The Speaker said he will urge all government departments to install rain water harvesting facility on their buildings.
Ram Krishnan, a graduate of IIT Chennai, living in Minnesota for the past 35 years, has experience in implementing similar projects in Tamil Nadu. Inspired by Prof Indiresan, a former director of Madras IIT, Ram Krishnan installed the facility at the institute. He persuaded Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha to install a system at her residence. He was also instrumental in setting up a Rain Centre in Chennai with the help of New Delhis Centre for the Science and the Environment. This rain centre is a museum and a laboratory for understanding water harvesting
