Information
The increase in intake capacity in engineering degree of some of the States from 1990-91 to 2003-04: Andhra Pradesh 8,070 to 66,205; Karnataka 19,452 to 40,920; Kerala 4,512 to 19,868; Madhya Pradesh 2,265 to 15,920; Maharashtra 20,425 to 47,450; Tamil Nadu 12,855 to 79,302; Uttar Pradesh 3,029 to 24,773; West Bengal 2,022 to 13,269; Delhi 1,290 to 3,800; Gujarat 2,780 to 10,325; Haryana 1,085 to 10,105; Jammu and Kashmir 480 to 970; Orissa 1,325 to 10,695; Punjab 1,508 to 10,701; and Rajasthan 1,629 to 10,785.
The total intake in all the States put together went up from 87,221 to 3,83,912.
The southern region consisting of Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry has 1,47,457 intake capacity; next largest are in southwest (60,788) and west (48,190). The central, eastern, northern and north-western regions have almost equal intake capacity ranging between 27,914 and 38,326. Sixteen States have large intake capacities amounting to nearly 98 per cent of total intake capacity in the country.
The discipline-wise growth from 1990 to 2004 has been: electronics/electrical/computer/IT 39,635 to 2,57,207; mechanical/production from 22,354 to 50,908; civil from 13,546 to 15,280; chemical from 4,590 to 6,954; textiles 1,044 to 2,297.
In biotechnology, it shot up from 3,284 in 2002 to 5,360 in 2004. In metallurgy, the intake has come down from 815 to 707.
In 2002, out of a total intake of 3,83,912, the intake in computer and information technology was 1,20,046 (34 per cent), electrical and electronics discipline 1,14,539 (33 per cent), mechanical (10.5 per cent) and civil (four per cent).
Approximately 90 per cent of students actually admitted graduate in four years or later. Based on the sanctioned intake capacities for the previous years and the available data on graduate in subsequent years, it is estimated that about one lakh engineering graduates must have passed out in 2002 and that it would reach 2.5 lakhs by 2006.
The graduations of engineering students for some States for 2002 and 2003 are: Andhra Pradesh 14,216 and 18,366; Karnataka 16,576 and 17,308; Kerala 3,838 and 4,378; Madhya Pradesh 3,788 and 5,609; Maharashtra 26,758 and 28,420; Tamil Nadu 15,889 and 21,098; Delhi 1,245 and 1,831; Gujarat 3,807 and 4,715; Haryana 2,141 and 2,459; Orissa 3,227 and 4,646; Punjab 2,356 and 3090; Uttar Pradesh 8,359 and 10,044; and West Bengal 2,922 and 4,199.
