Information
Vrutika Mody is only seventeen but already has vast experience in governance. A high school student of the Singapore American School, she is class president of the Student Government - which mediates between the school administration and the student body.
She heads Peace Initiative, a human rights organisation which is a break off from Amnesty International.
Vrutika was co-chair of the Security Council for a Model United Nations conference and oversaw one of the largest ever fundraisers organised by students earlier this year for the tsunami victims.
Exemplary leadership
In recognition of her exemplary leadership abilities and care for the community at large, Vrutika was one of the 25 youths from across the globe and the only one from S-E Asia to be honoured with the Tomorrow 25 Award by Bentley College and TIME magazine in May.
It all started when her high school counsellor wrote a recommendation to Bentley College that Vrutika be considered for the award.
Although heavily involved with studies and extra-curricular activities, Vrutika made time to write an essay on her recent community service effort, which raised S$110,000 for tsunami victims.
And before she knew it she was whisked off to the United States for the award ceremony, posing for a print advertisement for TIME and playing the part of the young ambassador for Singapore.
Family support
Vrutika credits family support and a sound education system at SAS for shaping her into the person she is today.
Paul Chmelik, principal, SAS, says: … The schools curriculum is structured to encourage students to think analytically and empower them to make the right choices, but ultimately… Vrutika is responsible for her own success.
Cultural identity intact
Born in Mumbai and an Indian-passport holder, Vrutika has spent most of her life outside the country. However, this has not taken away her sense of cultural identity. She speaks Gujarati at home to her sister, parents and grandparents, shares a neighbourhood with many Indian families, feels comfortable in both traditional Indian outfit as well as Western attire and eagerly shares her culture with non-Indian friends.
Asked if she ever finds herself pondering over her identity, Vrutika confidently says: Never. I think Im lucky in that I have the best of all worlds presented to me.
Words of wisdom indeed from a future leader of an increasingl globalised world.
