Information
A week after the Supreme Court pronounced its ruling banning government quota in unaided professional colleges, private managements in the state have come out with a series of concessions for students albeit with some riders.
Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges in Karnataka (Comed-K) has decided to earmark 25 per cent of seats in its colleges for students belonging to SC/ST, backward classes, for students from rural areas who have studied in Kannada medium and for also those coming from economically weaker sections of society.
Comed-K has also offered to conduct a single entrance test for admissions but this would be done only if the government agrees to scrap the CET Cell and sets up a neutral autonomous agency consisting of independent experts to conduct the test.
Briefing reporters about the resolutions adopted by the consortium, newly appointed Comed-K Chairman M R Jayaram said private managements are also willing to conduct centralised counselling for admissions to all its colleges.
No college will charge capitation fee in any form directly or indirectly. If any member is found to charge or collect capitation fee, such institution will be expelled from our association, he said. Private colleges were also committed to social justice and added that 25 per cent students will be charged approximately Rs 35,000 for MBBS course next year. The remaining students will be charged fees ranging from Rs 2-2.5 lakh, varying from college to college, he said. Under the present three-tier fee structure for medical courses, 30 per cent students pay a subsidised fee of Rs 35,000 per annum, 25 per cent pay Rs 1.65 lakh and students opting for seats under the management quota shell out Rs 3.7 lakh per year. The fees next year will be an average of the present three-tier fee structure, he said.
