Information
Tension prevailed for nearly an hour on Cherry Road in the city on Wednesday when the students of the Salem Government Arts College blocked traffic urging the Central and State Governments to immediately pass legislations to ensure reservation in private educational institutions.

Boycott

The students, numbering about 500, boycotted classes and gathered on the road. They raised slogans against the delay in moving a Bill for reservation following the recent Supreme Court verdict.

They wanted the Union Government to enact a special Act in this regard.

RDO holds talks

They also started blocking traffic on the busy Cherry Road. Vehicles on both sides lined up for nearly 20 minutes. Salem Revenue Divisional Officer V. Dakshinamoorthy, who came to the spot, held talks with the students representatives and urged them to lift the roadblock. After initial resistance, they lifted the blockade and allowed the traffic to resume.

Police interfere

But soon after the RDOs departure, they resorted to roadblock once again forcing the police to descend on the scene in full strength.

Senior police officials resumed talks with the students, who, however, refused to lift the blockade. At one stage, both sides were seen engaged in heated arguments and the police were about to remove them forcefully. However, the agitation was withdrawn after much persuasion and they disbursed after getting assurance from the officials concerned with regard to their demand.
