Canara College wins Mangalore round of Young World Quiz

Hemanth Kumar and P. Shivaprasad Kamath of Canara Pre-University College, Mangalore, walked away with the first prize at the Mangalore regional round of The Hindu Young World Quiz-2005 held at the Town Hall here on Wednesday.
They have qualified for the all-India final of the quiz, which will be held in Kochi on October 1. The duo received the award from Soumendu Mukherjee, Superintendent of Police, Dakshina Kannada.
Samarth V. Kudalkar and Darryl N. Lewis of Little Rock Indian School, Brahmavar, Udupi district, bagged the second place and Aishwarya Lakshmi and Vineetha V. Shetty of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Hebri, Udupi district, came third.
In the preliminary round, 211 teams from 90 high schools and pre-university colleges took part. The round involved a written test, and the top six teams were selected to participate in the quiz. V.V. Ramanan from Chennai was the quizmaster.
Lal Bahadur Shastri College, Sagar, Shimoga district, managed by the Malnad Development Foundation, secured the fourth position while the fifth and sixth positions were bagged by Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Pre-University College, Udupi, and Canara High School (Main), Mangalore, respectively.
The first Best Outstation Team prize was bagged by Kiran H. and Christoh Moses of S.M.S. Pre-University College, Brahmavar, Udupi and the second Best Outstation Team prize was won by Abdul Raouf and Tanmay Rao of Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Kannur, Kerala.
Mr. Mukherjee said that participating in such quizzes opens up a treasure of knowledge. The theme of this years quiz is On Everything India.
The regional rounds are being held in 11 places. The regional rounds at Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Hyderabad have been completed. The winning teams from these regions will participate in the all-India final in Kochi.
The national sponsors are Reynolds, State Bank of Travancore, Cycle Brand Agarbathis, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Penguin and Coca-Cola.
The regional sponsors are LIC of India, Udupi division; Bharat Petroleum, Mangalore; Narans Bread; BSNL Mangalore Circle; MRPL-ONGC; Harsha; GRS Fantasy Park, Mysore; and Cafe Coffee Day, Mangalore.

The Bangalore round of the annual The Hindu Young World quiz will be held in the city on August 29 at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Bhavn on Millers Road.
