Bangalore is living up to its reputation as the suicide capital of the south.
In one year, nearly a dozen students, particularly those studying in professional colleges or those aspiring for a seat in such colleges, have committed suicide in the city.
Parental pressure and undiagnosed depression have been among the causes. In most cases, the students ended their lives following their poor performance in examinations. After the Vivsevaraya Technological University announced the results of engineering examinations on Wednesday, Shruthi (21) of Vivekananda College of Engineering, Niveditha (18), a student of a private engineering college in Tumkur and a resident of Subedhar Chatram Road in Gandhinagar and Neolina (20) of CMR Institute of Technology, committed suicide by hanging themselves. The three girls had fared badly in their examinations.
In August-September last year, two engineering and two medical students committed suicide after they failed in their examinations.A day after the results were declared, II year B.E. (Computer Science) students of the Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology, Ambika (19) and I.D. Somanna (19), hanged themselves from the ceiling of their houses.
S. Roopa, alias Ruby (19), a II year MBBS student of Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) and Poojitha (24), a final year MBBS student of M.S. Ramaiah Medical College, committed suicide in the same manner.
Mohan Isaac of National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), who has compiled a research paper on the epidemiology of suicides, says there are several reasons for Bangalore leading the region in suicides among the sub-25 age group, most of them students.
The media should refrain from giving too much publicity to student suicides, which influence others, he says. Teachers in high schools and colleges should be trained to watch out for suicidal tendencies among students and the complex symptoms, which may range from becoming more withdrawn from campus activities to bouts of depression, Dr. Isaac says.
Bangalore University has a psychiatric counselling centre for students and has held training sessions for teachers in association with organisations like NIMHANS. Vice-Chancellor M.S. Thimmappa himself is a psychologist. Now, many teachers are alert to suicidal tendencies among students.
Shauna Thomas, a teacher who underwent similar training, blames parents for placing unnecessary pressure on children to aim for a first class, or distinction.
