The history of an electron has been made easy to understand with annotated illustrations and brief biographies of various scientists who contributed to the discovery.
Could anything at first sight seem more impractical than a body which is so small that its mass is an insignificant fraction of the mass of an atom of hydrogen? - JJ Thomson.
If you wonder how a particle so small that nobody has ever seen one can be discovered, this website provides the historical circumstances surrounding the discovery of electron, a fundamental building block of matter. The website also helps to learn about the scientific puzzlement of the period as well as the series of experiments which led to the breakthrough by J J Thomson in 1897.
The presentation made by the American Institute of Physics, provides an overview of the breakthrough leading to the discovery of the electron just over 100 years ago. The seven sections - A look inside the Atom (Home page), JJ Thomson, Mysterious Rays, 1897 Experiments, Corpuscles to Electrons, Legacy for Today and Exhibit Info - are all geared to the general public, putting into perspective the obstacles which had to be overcome before the electron was discovered.
A look inside the Atomtakes us one hundred years back when the British physicist J J Thomson ventured into the interior of the atom. At the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University, Thomson was experimenting with currents of electricity inside empty glass tubes. He was investigating a long-standing puzzle known as cathode rays. The section J J Thompson provides a brief insight into his personal life and achievements. Here we learn the great scientist was very awkward with his fingers, and had to be encouraged to handle the instruments! The next section is about the mysterious rays, about which JJ Thompson said There is no other branch of physics which affords us so promising an opportunity of penetrating the secret of electricity.
The chapter 1897 Experiments details the three experiments which helped him to advance the idea that cathode rays are really streams of very small pieces of atoms. Based on the 1897 experiments JJ Thompson presented three hypotheses and these are covered in the section Corpuscles to Electrons. In this section you can hear (and download) JJ Thompsons talk about the size of the electron and his discovery. The chapter Legacy for Today takes us through the technologies built on the discovery of the electron. Here we find access to many links which provide details about invention of the transistor, probably the most important invention of the 20th century, and to mini-exhibits on telecommunications and medical imaging. The last section Exhibit info contains several interesting links including The Discovery of the Electron produced to commemorate the 100th anniversary of JJ Thomsons groundbreaking experiments.
All these chapters along with annotated illustrations and brief biographies of the various scientists who contributed to the discovery help us understand how the discovery of the electron continues to influence the development of many items today.
