To end the frequent confusion surrounding admissions to professional colleges, Central Administrative Reforms Commission Chairman M Veerappa Moily on Monday urged the Centre to bring in a legislation before the start of the next academic year.
He was speaking at a seminar on The impact of Supreme Court judgement on admission and fee structure policy in self-financing professional colleges of Karnataka, organised by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU). Central legislation with common guidelines is the only solution to end the present problem. The government has unnecessarily delayed the process, he said.
He said that the new legislation should provide autonomy for states to include the local needs.
Referring to the dispute over fees between private college managements and the government, VTU Vice-chancellor Dr K Balaveera Reddy felt that managements should be allowed to fix fees for students admitted under management quota.
The government can fix the fee for its quota of students. This will solve the recurring conflicts, he said. Prof M Gurunath of Global Academy of Technology felt that a consensus can be reached if the ruling class has the political will and the managements a social commitment.
