Information
The growth of science has been tremendous through the ages. Over the years, facilities for research have increased substantially and so have opportunities for careers in science. In order to train students towards research careers, the Bangalore Association for Science Education (BASE) is offering the Research Education Advancement Programme (REAP) in basic sciences with focus on physics, astrophysics and physics in biology at the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium. This is in collaboration with three major research institutes - the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) and the Raman Research Institute (RRI).

REAP is a three-year programme that is offered concurrently with regular college education, complementing the formal curriculum. In this, students study subjects including Astrophysics, Astronomy, Physics and Mathematics.

In the first year, they are taught the fundamentals of these subjects. Interactive sessions are held with emphasis on understanding basic concepts, solving problems, innovative experiments and the use of computers. They are also trained in laboratory experiments and mathematical methods. They are given regular lab sessions and assignments to do. Visits to research institutes and their facilities including observatories are conducted and lectures by the faculty aim to expose the students to ongoing research. A break is provided at the time of the regular B.Sc. examination.

The second year deals with advanced techniques of research and experimentation in Physics. Lectures on advanced topics supplementary to basic courses are given. In the third year, the students do a project in one of the participating research institutes on a topic of their choice.

This course is open to students enrolled for B.Sc. degree with physics as one of the major subjects. A limited number of about 30 motivated and qualified students will be admitted initially to the programme. Based on their performance, select students will be offered stipends and will continue in the programme.

Since this programme is conducted parallel to the regular degree course, the sessions are held every weekend. There wont be any lectures or speeches in the true sense, just active interactions so that the learning is comprehensive.

Assessment is through all the assignments and lab work that they complete. Students successfully completing the programme will receive certificates and will be aided in pursuing research careers.

The Nehru Planetarium also conducts a yearly summer capsule to provide students with an introduction to scientific research. Most of the students from this programme get motivated for a career in science and join REAP.
