Information
The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has sent directives to the private institutions affiliated to Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University and the diploma-level institutions affiliated to the Board of Technical Education in Delhi to make provisions for the implementation of quota reservation for Backward Classes from the next academic session. The Delhi Cabinet discussed and passed the decree on Monday.

Under the Quota Reservation System, 55 unaided institutions of higher, technical and professional education in the Capital affiliated to the IP University will be covered. The system is also set to cover 10 diploma-level technical institutions affiliated to the Board of Technical Education. Prior to the Supreme Court order to implement the quota, a reservation system already existed in these institutions for the backward classes. However, there was no provision for reservation in the institutions affiliated to the IP University.

These institutions will reserve 15% of seats for the Scheduled Caste (SC) candidates, 7.5% for the Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates, 5% for the wards of defense personnel, 3% for Physically Challenged candidates and 10% will be in for the management quota. Apart from this, the diploma-level institutions will keep another 15% seats reserved for the Other Backward.

The Quota Reservation issue has been the main cause of the nation-wide stir among students against the Central Government and the HRD Ministry headed by Arjun Singh. Veerappa Moily, Chairman of the Oversight Committee, has explained that the total number of seats must be increased by 57% so that the general category seats are not affected.
