Information
As the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) counselling process ended this year, the National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C) got a shot in the arm by attracting better-ranking students. The closing All India Rank (AIR) when the counselling ended this year on July 7 was 14,054 as against 22,482 last year.
NIT-C had offered 30 more seats this year for Kerala students. This year the NIT-C could thus offer 440 seats as against last years 380. A new branch, chemical engineering, was introduced this year with an intake of 30 seats at NIT-C. Out of the 440 seats in NIT-C, Kerala students had a stake in 50 per cent of seats. Of these 160 were in the open category.
The AIEEE counselling, organised by Central Counselling Board (CCB) under the directive of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, is conducted for admissions to the undergraduate engineering/technology and architecture programmes, with the support of the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and participating institutions.
The 19 NITs, three Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other deemed institutions offered roughly 12,000 seats at the AIEEE counselling. Apart from the 220 seats at NIT-C, Kerala students including the reservation category, could take 133 seats more in other NITs participating in AIEEE counselling across the country. In the general category, 160 seats were available at NIT-C and another 115 in other NITs. Nearly 15 per cent seats at NIT-C are reserved for Scheduled Castes (SC), 7.5 per cent for Scheduled Tribes (ST) and 3 per cent for Physically Handicapped (PH). The CCB had selected 16 centres for this years AIEEE counselling, which included 14 NITs, the Delhi College of Engineering and BITS, Ranchi.
NIT-C was the only counselling centre for Kerala and Lakshadweep students who had qualified the AIEEE. The counselling process was held in two phases. The first was the off-campus on-line counselling, where candidates could exercise their choices at the place of their convenience. The students are made familiar with the counselling process in this phase. This was held at NIT-C from June 19 to 24.
One of the significant developments for the process was the introduction of digital signatures for entry to the counselling process as well as exit. This year, the cut-off rank eligible for counselling was fixed at 44,629 compared to the cut-off rank of 33,447 fixed last year.
