Deemed Universities can start new courses without UGC approval

Information
The University Grant Commission (UGC) has announced a concession to the deemed universities (DUs) of the country allowing them to start new courses without taking prior permission from it. The commission had previously forbidden these institutes to start such courses without seeking approval from the regulatory authority. But the present decision is taken to empower the deemed universities by introducing new courses and increasing their intake capacity.

According to the communication paper issued by the UGC, it has said that its approval is not required to start new courses in deemed universities. However the universities will have to abide by the UGC regulations that are issued from time to time. Again the universities will be required to maintain the norms and standards of the statutory councils viz. AICTE, Medical and Dental Councils of India.

The commission has agreed to allow the universities to start courses like B.A, B.SC., M.A., M.Sc. or M. Com. but can not start professional courses without taking prior approval from it.
