Information
It has the IIT tag, but is nt a technical institution. It is the first-ever law school that focuses on intellectual property rights (IPR), property and tech law and will be up and running in July.

In July, Kharagpur-based Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) will open its gates for the first-ever batch of students at what it calls the Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law.

Based on a decision by the HRD ministry, it is also the only law school to be run by an IIT. Incidentally, IIT-Kharagpur was also the first IIT to start a business school - Vinod Gupta School of Management - five years ago.

If the experiment is successful, the ministry of human resource development plans to start law schools in the other IITs as well.

The law school will start functioning from July 24. To start with, it would have two kinds of degrees - regular three-year residential LLB degree and a one-and-a-half year post-graduate part-time non-residential diploma.

These are areas which law schools based in the US, like George Washington University Law School, have just ventured into, said Probir Gupta, senior teacher at the institute and also the law schools spokesperson.

All candidates who satisfied the eligibility criteria were made to sit for a national level admission test. We have selected 40 of the best for our LLB course, said Gupta.
