Cutting across party lines, members in the Legislative Council on Friday urged Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj Horatti to introduce English language from Class I in Kannada medium schools. Some members also insisted on conducting Common Entrance Test (CET) for professional courses in Kannada.
Questioning the delay in implementation of English in schools, Marithibbe Gowda (Ind) asked if the government was committed to the welfare of rural students. English is being taught as one of the optionals in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and West Bengal. Knowledge of Hindi and English has become indispensable, said M P Nadagouda (Janata Dal (United).
Dr Chandrashekar Kambar (Congress) demanded that the CET be held in Kannada to eliminate inequality in education.
