The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has submitted a 100 crore project to the Union Government for upgrading its infrastructure to accommodate the extra 54% seats generated from the Quota Reservation system. The project includes investment on infrastructure such as libraries, classrooms, laboratories and faculties. The Quota Reservation System would be implemented from the 2007-08 academic session.
At present there are 570 B.Tech seats which will go up to 960 and in Masters there are 780 seats which would go up to 1200 after the reservation is implemented. Seats in the PhD programme will increase by 200 from 455. The Government is also planning to double the intake of students in the IITs in the next five years. Another campus would also be constructed by the Institute for this purpose. This campus will have an initial budget of Rs.800 crore and will be spread in an area over 300 acres. The Uttaranchal Government has agreed to provide land for the upcoming campus of the Institute.
