Information
The University of Tasmania, Australia, has entered the fray to attract Indian students from cities in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, positioning itself as the ideal destination in terms of the cost of education in an internationally reputed institution and availability of job opportunities (for part-time work).

At a free seminar organised by the Madurai-based Baasu Consultants, which also operates from its offices at Chennai, Cochin and Coimbatore as the Indian representative for admitting students to Australian universities, Susan Lacey, Deputy Director of International Services, University of Tasmania, said that the institution, set in Australias economically throbbing island State of Tasmania, provides ample scope for students to pursue their careers. Multi-national companies and local business concerns interview the university graduates each November and absorb them in large numbers. The island, about the same size as Sri Lanka, has a population of just over half-a-million people, she said.

Established in 1890, the University is the fourth oldest in Australia. As many as 1,850 international students, belonging to 70 countries, including China, Singapore, Malaysia, and India were enrolled for various programmes in the university functioning from two campuses: the State Capital, Hobart, and Launceston, both cosmopolitan cities.

The cost of living was lower than in any other State. This, combined with the competitive course fee and scholarships makes Tasmania the ideal study destination for obtaining quality education at an affordable fee.

The Australian Good Universities Guide 2006 recently awarded the University of Tasmania a 5-star rating for research grants, said Ms. Susan, adding that the key research areas were Geology, Agriculture, Environment, Engineering, Business, Medical Health, Pharmacy, Life Sciences and Aquaculture.

Ms. Susan will be visiting several colleges in the two States to meet academics and researchers to explain what Tasmania can offer to the rest of the world.
