Information
Anna University will get each of its affiliated colleges to adopt five higher secondary schools in their vicinity to ensure academic excellence at the Plus Two level, Vice-Chancellor D. Viswanathan said on Thursday.
The move, he said, was in the wake of rising vacancies in engineering courses.
Though the starting of 14 new engineering colleges and enhancement of intake in many others had led to the increase in vacancies (20,000 this year), the basic cause was the poor performance at the Plus Two level. This was due to constraints on infrastructure and faculty fronts in higher secondary schools.
The engineering colleges would offer their academic expertise and laboratory facilities to the adopted schools during weekends. The university would unveil, in due course, other measures to infuse quality into higher secondary education, Dr. Viswanathan told reporters.
Nearly 35 affiliated colleges had admission level of below 50 per cent. While 28,000 vacancies in circuit branches had been filled, the casualties were the core disciplines. However, most of the colleges had completed admissions to management quota seats.
Colleges collecting fees over and above the amount stipulated by the Raman Committee would come under the scanner. The University was prepared to arrange for bank loans to students only for the amount advocated by the Committee, he said, answering a query.
Regarding campus interviews, he said there was good response to the extension of the process to Tiruchi and Salem, in addition to Chennai, Madurai, and Coimbatore. The University had roped in 45 concerns for conducting the interviews this year. Over 95 per cent of students of Anna University had secured placements and the performance of the affiliated colleges was encouraging too.
