Distance education not only caters to the need of those students who are unable to enroll into a formal stream of education but also fulfils the need of lifelong learning among working professionals. Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has launched a BTech in Mechanical Engineering (Computer Integrated Management) programme for diploma-holders in engineering, who want to upgrade their qualification and skill-set.
According to Gayatri Kansal,director, School of Engineering and Technology, IGNOU, The four-year BTech course is an opportunity for diploma-holders of engineering, who are working and cannot leave their jobs to pursue further education.
The programme consists of three modules — Diploma in Computer Integrated Manufacturing, (DCIM), Advanced Diploma in Computer Integrated Manufacturing, (ADCIM),and BTech degree. In case, a student decides to drop out of the programme on completing a year of the BTech programme, he or she will be given the certification of DCIM. Similarly after two years of the programme, a student will be eligible for the ADCIM and after four years, for the BTech degree.The programme is designed to pro¬vide flexibility so that students can be awarded credits at different stages, she said.
Counselling classes for the BTech programme will be held on weekends at the study centres.Three weeks of practical training will also be held as a part of the programme.
