Cambridge University Press (Cup), One Of The Oldest Printing And Publishing Houses
It S a long-term relationship that two publishing houses decided to formalise. Cambridge University Press (CUP), one of the oldest printing and publishing houses in the world, has acquired a 51 per cent stake in New Delhi-based Foundation Books Private Limited. Renamed Cambridge University Press India Private Limited, CUP has pumped around US $5 to 6 million into the Indian company. Speaking on the occasion, Stephen Bourne, Chief Executive, CUP and President of Cambridge University Press India Private Limited said, We have had a longterm relationship with Foundation Books and with the acquisition of a 51 per cent stake, we hope to expand our business further. CUP already has a strong presence in the British market and there is no scope for the market to grow further. It is in markets like India that there is an opportunity for expansion, said Bourne. The company has already had an eight-year-old relationship with the country when it shifted its typesetting operations to India. According to Bourne, India un-like the US, is a country that looks outwards and this is what makes it a perfect fit for a publishing house like CUP. Here, 20,000 new titles are published every year and we are looking for a piece of that pie, he added.
CUP is committed to the South Asian market and this partnership will fund product development and will entail considerable investments in technology services and people. We would like to focus on China and West Asia because these will be first class business destinations.
CUP, a department of the University of Cambridge, is one of the largest academic and educational publishers in the world, publishing nearly 2,500 books and nearly 200 journals annually Foundation Books is optimistic about the arrangement. Said Manas Saikia, Managing Director, CUP India Pvt. Ltd., The investment and management resources available will enable Foundation Books to build further on its already strong position in the educational sector.
