Ferguson-Proffit Nursing Scholarship Established Through DSLCC Educational Foundation

Donna Proffit Vaughn of Eagle Rock and her family have established, through the Dabney S. Lancaster Community College Educational Foundation, the Ferguson-Proffit Nursing Scholarship. The scholarship is given in honor and in memory of Eunice F. and Melvin F. Proffit from their daughter, Donna, and son-in-law, Stephen Vaughn, and grandchildren Ehren Vaughn, Tyler Vaughn, Heather Vaughn Kefir and Stephanie Vaughn.

Eunice Ferguson Proffit was a graduate of Buchanan High School in Buchanan, and a registered nurse and graduate of the former Lewis-Gale School of Nursing in Roanoke. Melvin F. Proffit was a graduate of Jefferson High School in Roanoke, and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Armys 116th Infantry, 29th Division. He retired as a manager of Lowes and Company.

Regarding their decision to create the scholarship, Vaughn commented, Having worked as a teacher and a guidance counselor for thirty years in the Botetourt County School System, the Clifton Forge School System, and the Alleghany County School System, I have observed first-hand just how valuable a nursing education at Dabney S. Lancaster Community College can be. I became very familiar with the nursing program when the area school systems were trying to start a school nurse program. The student nurses from DSLCC, with supervision from their nursing instructors, served as our first school nurses while grants for a full-time program were being located, written, and finally awarded. Currently, many of our school nurses in several counties are graduates from the DSLCC nursing program.
