Deemed Universities have Promised to Implement ReservationsDeemed Universities have Promised to Implement Reservations News channels have recently carried reports claiming that certain unaided deemed universities have promised to implement reservations for SC/ST and OBC in which BITS-Pilanis name was mentioned. However, the institute claims that it has submitted a note to the Ministry of Human Resource Development expressing its views on reservations. According to BITS, merit must be the only criterion for admissions so as to ensure homogenous input into the higher education system. It believes that provisions must be made at schools to give special coaching so that all students can compete at par.

Date 2006-07-21 Information The University Grant Commission (UGC) has announced a concession to the deemed universities (DUs) of the country allowing them to start new courses without taking prior permission from it. The commission had previously forbidden these institutes to start such courses without seeking approval from the regulatory authority. Date 2006-07-25 Information The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat (ABVP) has urged the State Government not to implement the new admission policy for the postgraduate courses in universities until preparatory steps are taken. Addressing presspersons here on Monday, Prabhudev Kappagal, state unit secretary of the ABVP, said the organisation was against any move to implement the new admission policy without holding discussions with teachers, educational experts and student organisations. With this, the total reservations will reach 51 per cent, which goes against the Supreme Court order that reservations should not cross 50 per cent. The senior faculty at the IITs is toying with suggestions to attract and retain quality faculty. With 54 per cent expansion in existing IITs coupled with six new IITs taking off from this year, the faculty crunch is perhaps the biggest challenge for the institutes. IIT Bombay faculty affairs dean Devang Khakhar says the existing and new IITs would need about 3,000 faculty members in the next five years. Firstly, like all the other US universities, IIT faculty could get an annual compensation payable for 10 months. The remaining two months could be utilised for research work and industry-sponsored projects.

Colleges being given IIT status or the status of other national institutions have to allow half the seats to be filled from all-India quota. The Centre is planning to bring in the long-awaited legislation on the admission and fee structure in private professional institutions. A draft bill the private educational institutions has been prepared and circulated to states and members of the Central Advisory Board for Education for comments. The comments are expected within a month, and the government hopes to introduce the final legislation in Parliament within a month and half. That would be the winter session of Parliament. The University Grants Commission is working on a module to make live research part of undergraduate courses and interaction between scientific institutes and university students mandatory for the postgraduate studies. The initiative is part of the ministrys decision to improve the scientific research in universities and colleges. The ministry has approved the recommendations of a task force headed by Prof.M.M.Sharma. According to the ministry, the UGC has already decided to make scientific research part of undergraduate courses.
