State considers online high school

An Internet invention called a virtual high school might soon let South Dakota teenagers study and earn credits in a chat-room setting.

A state official will explain the idea today, and the Sioux Falls School Board soon will consider a policy to let local students participate.

The proposal would serve students seeking advanced classes that local districts do not teach. It also would provide an online avenue for those needing to repeat a class or work around a scheduling conflict. Schools would monitor the process, but participating students would need to work independently through e-mail communication with an unseen teacher.
