University provides third-grade scholarship

To a rising fourth grader, a $20,000 scholarship to Appalachian State University may not mean much, but come high school, all that can change.

For the past nine years in Wayne County, an underrepresented student with the highest score on the math portion of the end of grade test has been awarded such a scholarship.

We identify them early and tell them they can do it, that they will grow up and be successful, Associate Vice Chancellor for Diversity Harry L. Williams said.

A ceremony for the winner is held annually in the school library. The winner is presented the award by two spokespeople from Appalachian in front of their teachers, principal, family and local media.
