Jesuit Superior General Says Educating Poor Is Jesuits Priority In India
Father Peter-Hans Kolvenbach reiterated the need to educate the poor during the golden jubilee celebrations of a Jesuit college in the western Indian state of Gujarat.
The 78-year-old Jesuit superior general, who is on a Nov. 5-17 visit to India, was chief guest at the Nov. 15 celebrations of St. Xaviers College in Ahmedabad, 950 kilometers southwest of New Delhi.
Father Kolvenbach maintained that globalization and an open-market system are forcing governments to reduce educational subsidies, thus making it more difficult for poor people to pursue an education.
